Bruce Ames
Prof Bruce Ames (pictured above) welcomed NutraIngredients-USA to his office at the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) to discuss a new review of selenium and its role in chronic disease risk.
Joyce McCann, PhD, and Prof Ames analyzed data from hundreds of published articles, and found that that selenium-dependent proteins considered essential to ensuring an organism survives until it reaches reproductive age are largely more resistant to selenium deficiency than non-essential selenoproteins.
The findings - that maintaining adequate intakes of the mineral may reduce the risk of age-related diseases such as cancer and heart disease - appear to fit with Prof Ames' triage theory.
The review is published in the FASEB Journal. To read our coverage of the review, please click here.
