GC Rieber VivoMega, which supplies omega-3 concentrates globally, has announced plans to build a new facility in Norway as part of a $75 million five-year investment strategy.

The company expects to more than double output of its high-end triglyceride form of omega-3s EPA and DHA once the site is fully operational in early 2024. It hopes the expansion will help it to achieve its goal of becoming a global leader in omega-3 concentrates.

Increasing production

Jan Roger Bjerkestrand, Managing Director of GC Rieber VivoMega, says: “This investment is part of GC Rieber VivoMega’s continual commitment to develop the needed facilities for the increased capacity and production of our industry leading omega-3 oils.

“To minimise our eco-footprint, we will be leveraging much of the existing infrastructure, including docks, tanks, laboratories, and energy to provide the same high-quality product that our customers are asking for.”

GC Rieber VivoMega expects to finish constructing a 32,000 metric ton tank park as well as updated technology platforms at its current manufacturing plants this summer.

According to the company, the tank park has allowed it to adjust to existing challenges in the supply chain and is a vital strategic benefit in supporting new expansions.

Extra flexibility

The new plant is also being designed with additional flexibility to aid future strategic growth areas in omega-3 high-end concentrates, as well as any new raw material sources.

Bjerkestrand adds: “We are encouraged that this new development will enable GC Rieber VivoMega to continue to grow and expand as a leading high-end omega-3 supplier.

“With one of the world’s largest fish oil manufacturing and storage facilities, the expansion will provide GC Rieber VivoMega with added flexibility to meet our customers’ ongoing supply needs.”

Producing marine-derived omega-3 concentrates in an environmentally sustainable way, GC Rieber VivoMega has, in recent years, expanded its facility many times. This includes introducing a new concentration production site to deliver high-grade DHA and EPA fish oils (up to 800mg/g).
