Algal opportunity: What’s next in the pipeline?
VP sales and marketing Bob Capelli (right) won’t say whether omega-3s are next in Cyanotech's innovation pipeline, but confirms bosses are looking beyond astaxanthin and spirulina and are already exploring several other microalgae-based products.
But one thing Cyanotech isn’t interested in is biofuel, says Cysewski (left).
“We get calls every day asking if we want to collaborate on biofuel projects, but in my opinion, it will never be practical. They have invested more than $1bn in this already and we are not close even today [to making algae a cost-effective alternative to other fuel sources].”
As for expansion plans, there is plenty of room to expand at the Kona facility, says Cyeswski. “The Natural Energy Lab has 750 acres of land and only half of it is occupied, so we could lease more land. At the moment we’re selling everything we can produce.”
