NutraCast Podcast: Kat Merryfield on CBG & CBN
CBG, known as the “mother” of all cannabinoids. It helps synthesize other cannabinoids, primarily THC and CBD.
CBG is the precursor of cannabinoids, while CBN is on the opposite end of the spectrum. CBN is the product of degraded cannabinoids and comes from the oxidation and decomposition of THC.
Kat Merryfield, the founder of CBD brand Kat’s Naturals in rural Tennessee joined the Nutracast to help break down the lesser known cannabinoids. She has a background in homeopathic medicine, formulation, and is an expert on all things hemp and cannabis.
“Five years ago when we started our company, CBD was between $20,000-$30,000 a kilo, then it started to go down. Two years ago it was down around $10,000 and then last year we had an overproduction of hemp across the country and so now a kilo of CBD goes for between $2,000-$5,000 a kilo.”
Merryfield explained CBN and CBG are experiencing a similar trend. She said the price of CBG has seen a pretty significant decrease: “The price has gone down by about half, but it’s still $15,000 a kilo. You can get it a little bit lower if you’re buying in bulk. CBN on the other hand, is it about $20,000-$30,000 a kilo. You don’t need a huge amount in your formulation which is great, but our CBG formula actually has a 1:1 ratio of CBG and CBD.”
The formulator predicts that once growers and labs have a better handle on production techniques, the prices for all cannabinoids will drop. “I think that eventually we’re going to see all the cannabinoids kind of hitting a homeostasis where the pricing is about normal.”
