The second episode of the NutraCast looks at clinical research, new ingredient innovation and product development.

We speak with Dr. Hector Lopez, the co-founder of Supplement Safety Solutions, the principal and partner at The Center for Applied Health Sciences, and CEO of NovaNutra.

Dr. Lopez discusses regulatory compliance, which he cites as the top reason there has been a slowdown in new product innovation.

We also discuss the open label trend, which is especially important for athletes who must avoid banned substances.

However, Dr. Lopez pointed out why open label is not always an option for some companies.

“Proprietary blends provide an opportunity for innovation and IP protection and patents on composition if in fact a company finds something that is not obvious that can enhance or improve health and wellness in sports nutrition categories.”

Dr. Lopez also covered what he looks for in good research. To find out how to comb through studies and identify quality science like an expert, listen to the podcast.
