Nuseed Nutritional US Inc. has partnered with Connoils for the exclusive production and distribution of Nutriterra DHA Canola oil in powder formats.

“Connoils technology is producing powder with unmatched stability and quality,” said Nuseed Nutritional Nutraceutical Lead Mark Smith. Connoils utilizes low temperature electrostatic dehydration to achieve excellent encapsulation and maintain nutritional integrity, according to a press release.

In addition, the clean excipient ingredients are in line with Nutriterra’s simple expeller pressed oil, added the release.

This new format expands potential applications to include functional foods and beverages for NuSeed’s transgenic long-chain omega-3-rich oil, derived from transgenic canola.

Nutriterra has already received New Dietary Ingredient status from the FDA for use in dietary supplements.

“We’ve been searching for the right plant-based omega-3 for our portfolio, and Nutriterra is best-in-class” said Stacy Peterson, president of Connoils. Connoils already supplies Nutriterra DHA Canola oil to food, nutrition, and beauty customers.

Plant-derived alternative

Nutriterra omega-3 oil is derived from canola genetically engineered to produce higher levels of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, C22:6 n-3).

As demand for omega-3s continues to rise and pressures on fish stocks increase, alternative sources are being explored from algae to copepods and genetically engineered oil seed crops, such as canola and camelina.

Nuseed has previously estimated that one hectare of its omega-3 canola has the potential to provide the omega-3 yield from 10,000 kgs of wild caught fish.

“Our proprietary research indicates that 64% of consumers prefer a plant-based omega-3 when presented an alternative to marine oils,” said Smith. “Nutriterra offers a mild flavor and is Friend of the Sea certified, so consumers can meet their nutritional needs without compromising their taste or values.”
