Wellness brand Shaklee recently introduced Meology Prenatal, an extension of the core Meology line, to support all three natal phases.

The direct sales distributor said the new offering was designed to address the nutritional needs from preconception to postpartum. The customizable program combats the traditional large pill format of prenatal vitamins with new formats for easier digestion.

Shaklee's Meology program, first introduced in September 2020, determines nutritional needs based on biology, lifestyle, and health goals in addition to DNA and blood test results that can be manually inputted in an assessment. The program is powered by a patent-pending algorithm and product recommendation engine that delivers personalized nutrition recommendations.

Meology Kids debuted as a follow-up in September 2021 to ensure the next generation receives the nutrients they need for developing bodies.

The company said Meology Prenatal is a natural next step.

Recognizing that personalized nutrition is important during pregnancy, Shaklee developed Meology Prenatal to target the individual symptoms each woman experiences with carefully formulated ingredients.

“Because the core nutrients needed by mom and baby are the same during all three natal stages, each phase of the Meology Prenatal program includes the same three core products. Together these products deliver 23 essential vitamins and minerals, including 100% or more of the daily value of 21 vitamins and minerals including folic acid, iron, iodine, calcium, and vitamin D. As well as 250 mg of DHA, 50 mg of EPA, and 225 mg choline. These core products also meet daily values requirements as well as recommendations established by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists,” said Erin Barrett, PhD, nutritional biochemist and Director of Scientific Affairs and Product Innovation at Shaklee.

The process

The original Meology for adults is powered by a patent-pending algorithm and product recommendation engine that makes millions of instantaneous decisions based on the Meology assessment responses to determine the amount and types of nutrients needed. This technology evaluates nutrient needs collectively and maps them to products containing the nutrients and amounts needed.

The Meology Prenatal takes that assessment a step further to deliver a comprehensive nutrition and personalized targeted solution throughout the motherhood journey.

Meology Prenatal first involves a short assessment to determine if users are (1) preparing to get pregnant, (2) pregnant or (3) postpartum. From there daily grab-and-go packs are delivered every month.

While the core nutrients needed by mom and baby are the same during all 3 natal stages, because no two pregnancies are alike, Meology Prenatal personalizes plans to address mom’s occasional discomforts. These discomforts vary from phase to phase and also from woman to woman. Products delivering nutrients to address these needs, including fertility, stress, and sleep support, and relief of occasional leg cramps, mild indigestion, morning sickness, and constipation, can be added to Meology orders.

Core ingredients

  • The Core Nutrition pack includes three key products delivered in novel, easy-to-take form factors that provide 23 essential vitamins and minerals, as well as 250 mg DHA and 225 mg of choline:
  • Prenatal MultiV Drink Mix is a gentle-on-the stomach powdered multivitamin drink mix that provides all essential vitamins and 8 major trace minerals as well as 225 mg choline.
  • MultiM Tablet is packed with minerals essential to every stage of the motherhood journey.
  • Omega-3 Gellys are strawberry lemonade–flavored chewables that provide 250 mg DHA to support baby's developing eyes and brain.

Tackling discomforts

Barrett noted that Meology Prenatal personalizes plans to address mom’s occasional discomforts with add-ons. These add-ons include discomforts such as fertility, stress, sleep support, relief of occasional leg cramps, mild indigestion, morning sickness and constipation. These ingredients include:

  • COQ10 for fertility and conception support
  • Stress Relief Complex to help relieve tension and stress
  • Chewable Cal Mag Plus for occasional leg cramps, sleep challenges and mild indigestion
  • Optiflora DI for digestive and immune support
  • Vita-D3 to support the vitamin D content of breast milk

Or added to orders and taken as needed:

  • Stomach Soothing Drops for occasional morning sickness and upset stomach
  • Life Shake to support a healthy weight when trying to conceive and to provide additional calories and plant-based protein needed during pregnancy and while breastfeeding
  • Energizing Tea for natural energy

"In this special time of a woman's life, we know that they require specific vitamins and nutrients to help prepare their bodies for conception, ensure the baby is healthy and growing, and address the changes they experience postpartum. Meology Prenatal is a science-backed solution that caters to these special needs experienced during each phase,” said Roger Barnett, Chairman and CEO, Shaklee Corporation.
