Advances in compliance, diligence, responsibility, and transparency has moved the needle on best practices in the sports nutrition category, and the perception that the category is the “Wild West” is outdated, says the CSO of Dymatize.

Speaking with NutraIngredients-USA via video, Dr Rob Wildman told us: “I’ve been doing this for a while and I used to hear that the Sports nutrition industry was the Wild West a lot more frequently than I hear it today. As a whole, we’ve really gained the trust of the consumer now more than ever. We solve problems together and it really is an exciting time for the industry.

“And I attribute a lot of that to trade associations like AHPA and their Sports Nutrition Committee, which I chair. It’s very collaborative, and it’s a spirit of consumer-first, and from there you cannot go wrong.”

AHPA Sports Nutrition Congress

Dr Wildman, as chair of AHPA’s Sports Nutrition Committee, has played a key role in the development of the upcoming AHPA Sports Nutrition Congress.

“It [the congress] coincides with the 10th anniversary of AHPA’s Sports Nutrition Committee, so it’s a special year for us… The Congress will provide sort of a game-plan for participants to really put their best foot forward when it comes to manufacturing, supplying, or marketing sports nutrition products. It’s more of an industry-building platform,” said Dr Wildman.

The one-day virtual event will cover business building and consumer trust, regulation, liability and risk reduction, developing a cost-effective research program for companies, and more.

The keynote speaker for the event is David Vobora, founder, Adaptive Training Foundation (ATF), and a former NFL linebacker.

Vobora was tagged with the nickname, Mr. Irrelevant, when he was picked last in the 2008 NFL Draft, and his four-year career as a pro linebacker with the NFL’s Rams and Seahawks was cut short at age 25, when he was felled by a shoulder injury followed by an addiction to painkillers.

He turned his life around after kicking his addiction and opening up a gym. But he found an even greater purpose the day he met US Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, a quadruple amputee. Together, they built a customized, adaptive workout plan to address the unique challenges posed by Mills’ injuries, and Vobora’s passion for helping other veterans with similar challenges led him to found the Adaptive Training Foundation.

“It’s the most inspirational story, I think, in all of training,” said Dr Wildman.

His keynote address will focus on his life-altering experience, providing inspiration for an audience that appreciates athletes as well as the role that food, dietary supplements, training and lifestyle provides for the sports nutrition community at large.
