Frankfort, IL-based HyPhyto has announced the self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status of its CardioCare phytosterol for use in functional foods and beverages.

“Achieving self-affirmed GRAS status for our CardioCare phytosterol assures our customers that they can safely use this unique ingredient to provide the proven benefit of reduction in dietary cholesterol that occurs when plant sterols are consumed,” said Richard Staack, HyPhyto CEO.

“Our novel method of producing dispersible phytosterols allowsCardioCare to be easily added to a variety of products including supplement drinks, carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, enhanced waters, energy drinks, tea, coffee and soups without impacting flavor, color or viscosity.

Staack told us last week that there is growing demand from manufacturers for cost-effective phytosterols that won’t impact the flavor, color or viscosity of functional beverages, which was the impetus for creating the uniquely dispersible phytosterol, branded CardioCare.

The CardioCare sterols contain the same major sterols that are the basis for the FDA health claim: sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol in quantities that exceed the minimum required content, added the company.

According to the company, an independent panel of qualified scientists reviewed the safety and toxicology data of the ingredient, which is manufactured in conformity with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
