Opportunities for audience engagement to couple with access to subject matter experts at upcoming event

The sports nutrition sector has changed dramatically in the past year. NutraIngredients-USA’s upcoming Sports and Active Nutrition Summit 2021 will cover these developments in detail, as well as give attendees the chance to win $100 via virtual workout participation.

This year’s summit kicks off tomorrow with the first of four events, titled ‘The changing retail landscape for Sports Nutrition.’  It will feature subject matter experts such as Michael Archbold, former CEO of GNC, and consultants Joshua Schall, former director of business strategy at MusclePharm, and Marc Brush, former editor of Nutrition Business Journal​.

Sports nutrition and e-commerce

One of the big ways the market has changed has been the push toward e-commerce.  The closing of gyms is an obvious touchpoint, as is the reluctance of many consumers to expose themselves to possible infection by visiting terrestrial retail outlets.  But the sports sector was in some ways primed to cope, Brush said.

“The entire e-commerce game is pretty new compared to the story of terrestrial retail.  People in the sports category were there at the beginning trying to figure out strategies that worked,” ​Brush told NutraIngredients-USA​.

“This is where the sports category was pretty smart.  They figured out they could use these dedicated customers as beta testers.  You’d give them special SKUs, such as flavors available only to them.  They’d get closer to your brand, help you figure out what works, and in the process you’d learn more about them,”​ he said.

Other segments of the event, which will play out through the month of February, will focus on the microbiome (Feb. 4), recovery (Feb. 18), and whitespaces in sports nutrition with a focus on the female athlete and E-sports (Feb. 25).

Win $100 during Virtual Workout Day

One fun aspect of the event every year is an opportunity for audience members and panelists to put their mouths where their money is, so to speak, and participate in a communal bit of exercise, whether it be a run or a walk.  While that’s obviously not possible this year, the staff here at NutraIngredients-USA​ feels the lack of in-person interaction as much as anyone. So, as a substitute, we’ve introduced our Virtual Workout Day.
