Manufacturers of everything from bread to sports supplements are now incorporating beta glucan-based ingredient Wellmune WGP into their products as consumer demand for immune health products grows, says brand owner Biothera.

Derived from the cell wall of a proprietary strain of baker’s yeast, Wellmune WGP ‘primes’ the innate immune system - the body’s first line of defense against invasion by bacteria and viruses – and can withstand wide pH ranges, high temperatures and harsh processing conditions.

This means it can be incorporated into a broader range of products than many probiotics, said Biothera CEO Richard Mueller, who caught up with NutraIngredients-USA at the IFT show in Las Vegas.

“With the whole immune health category, it’s nice that the stars seem to be aligned in so many ways right now”, says Mueller.

“It’s become public knowledge that today’s immune system is not as developed as it was decades ago, especially children’s immune systems.”
