Mead Johnson Nutritionals' Canada unit has introduced a new DHA- and ARA-fortified infant formula to its line of Enfamil products.

Enfamil A+ contains a blend of plant-derived docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (ARA) made by US company Martek Biosciences. Martek claims that Enfamil A+ is the first formula in Canada to contain these nutrients.

DHA and ARA, naturally present in breast milk, are important in the mental and visual developement of infants.

Martek's blend of DHA and ARA, which is developed using microalgae, were reviewed by Health Canada and cleared for use in Canadian infant formula in October last year. The blend has also been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Enfamil A+ is currently available in stores throughout Canada. Martek Biosciences also makes nutritional supplements and food ingredients for mental and cardiovascular health.
