Sustainable nutraceutical ingredients developer Roelmi HPC has launched a new division with a production and research hub focused on innovation through fermentation and the circular economy.

The Italian firm has established Roelmi Biotech at a dedicated production plant in Gerenzano, Italy to focus on innovation through biofermentation.

Located within the Insubria BioPark, a science and technology park and business incubator, the new facility will develop active molecules, biomass and biotechnological products.

Focused on ‘white biotechnology’ capabilities—micro-organisms such as bacteria, yeast and fungi, the facility will extend the firm’s capabilities from lab research to industrial production scale.

“The opening of this facility is a source of great pride for us,” said Eleonora Santus, general manager of Roelmi Biotech. “It represents a strategic step that strengthens our market presence, enhances the local area and reaffirms our commitment to sustainable and responsible production.”

The company seeks to contribute to the health of the planet, as well as human health, by transforming by-products of the Italian agri-food industry into new resources, improving production efficiency of selected key ingredients and aiming to reduce environmental impact.

Advancing fermentation solutions

Roelmi HPC (Health and Personal Care) developed a fermentation method dedicated to hyaluronic acid metabolites in 2008. This led to the launch of the cosmetic line PrincipHYAL, created with the Full Spectrum Hyaluronans technology—an approach that generates a broad range of molecular weights working in synergy, mimicking the natural processes of the skin.

This vision expanded in 2010, when the same technological foundations were applied to create ExceptionHYAL, a line of dietary supplement ingredients designed to support well-being.

The company inaugurated a dedicated research and development laboratory in Novara, Italy in 2022, focused on fermentation and the creation of cutting-edge biotechnological processes, evolving from bench-scale research to industrial production.

In December 2022, the company launched EquiBiotics, a line of postbiotic ingredients designed to support and balance the skin’s natural microbiota.

The ingredients are developed using a tyndalization process, which deactivates bacteria while preserving their structural integrity—allowing them to interact beneficially with the skin microbiota.

Sustainable cosmetic supplements

Some of the biotech innovations already developed by Roelmi HPC include ingredients belonging to the next generation hyaluronans—advanced forms of hyaluronic acid designed to enhance bioavailability.

Targeting the menopause market, ExceptionHYAL Blossom supports vaginal mucosa hydration to help alleviate itching, dyspareunia, vaginal atrophy and pain, while also promoting bone health for a more holistic menopause solution.

ExceptionHYAL Wink works on eye hydration to reduce light sensitivity and difficulties with watching screens and reading.

ExceptionHYAL Relief aims to protect oral and gastric-oesophagus mucosa from the aggression of pathogens and acids, promote regeneration of injured tissue and soothe the inflammation.

ExceptionHYAL Star supports moisturization and elasticity of the skin through improved hyaluronic acid production.

Part of the ‘2.0 generation’ of hyaluronans, ExceptionHYAL Jump works to lubricate and plump tissues to cushion joints and reduce stiffness. It also supports joint mobility and helps reduce inflammation.
