Skin Moderne targets gut–skin axis and cellular health in nutricosmetic debut

"What we’ve found is that once people try it and begin to feel changes in their gut while also seeing improvements in their skin, a light bulb goes off," said Skin Moderne CEO Richard Purvis.

With the launch of i/O Beauti, Skin Moderne joins a growing group of beauty brands embracing clinically aligned nutrition strategies—this time, with tributyrin and spermidine at its core.

The beauty brand has entered the beauty-from-within category with a dual-pathway formulation that reflects broader shifts in supplement development, including a stronger emphasis on biological relevance, supplier-driven science and systemic health mechanisms such as the gut–skin axis and autophagy.

The company’s new launch, the i/O Beauti supplement, is built around two branded ingredients from ingredient supplier Compound Solutions: CoreBiome, a postbiotic tributyrin compound, and Yüth, a high-purity spermidine extract. According to CEO Richard Purvis, the formulation is a product of long-term research into the gut’s impact on skin, aging and overall physiological health.

“We have long been fascinated by the bidirectional relationship between the gastrointestinal tract and the skin,” Purvis told NutraIngredients. “There is an undeniable correlation between gut health and skin health.”

Formulation anchored in two distinct biological pathways

Rather than rely on familiar nutricosmetic ingredients like collagen or biotin, Skin Moderne opted for a more systems-level approach, targeting both microbiome modulation and cellular renewal.

“By targeting both simultaneously, we could create a synergistic effect—supporting the body at its foundation while also promoting cellular renewal and longevity,” Purvis said.

CoreBiome is positioned to address gut barrier integrity, microbiome balance and immune system crosstalk. Yüth, meanwhile, was selected for its links to mitochondrial health and autophagy, which are functions Purvis said are central to long-term skin vitality.

“Unlike supplemental collagen or biotin, which lacked the kind of solid clinical data we required, both CoreBiome and Yüth offered compelling, peer-reviewed evidence of their efficacy,” he added.

New human keratinocyte data under review

Skin Moderne is also referencing new, unpublished research currently under review, focused on the effects of spermidine on human primary keratinocytes.

The study, conducted at Auburn University’s School of Kinesiology, is titled “The effects of spermidine on functional and transcriptomic markers in human primary keratinocytes” and is authored by Derick A. Anglin et al.

Although the findings have not yet been published, the data may contribute to a growing body of evidence on how spermidine affects skin cell function.

Beauty brands expanding into nutrition

The launch of i/O Beauti positions Skin Moderne among a growing cohort of beauty companies entering the supplement space, not through private-label products but through integrated R&D that draws directly from biotech and supplier-driven ingredient development.

"
The reality is that these two targets, gut health via the gut–skin axis, and enhanced autophagy for cellular vitality, remain largely unmet by anything else currently on the market," said Skin Moderne CEO Richard Purvis.

“If we were going to enter the supplement space, it had to be with something truly differentiated, backed by strong science, and not just another ‘me too’ product,” Purvis said.

He emphasized that the strategy reflects not only a category opportunity but also a shift in how the company is allocating internal R&D: “This new inside-out pathway builds on our long-standing philosophy that true skin health starts from within.”

Education still a key barrier in emerging categories

While gut health and autophagy are gaining traction in functional nutrition, consumer understanding of these mechanisms is still developing. Purvis said education will play a central role in the company’s go-to-market strategy.

“i/O Beauti is such a unique concept that many consumers are still learning how to grasp it,” he noted. “Once people try it and begin to feel changes in their gut while also seeing improvements in their skin, a light bulb goes off.”

Moving forward, Skin Moderne plans to continue investing in ingredients and formats that bridge the realms of beauty, wellness and measurable physiological function.

“We’re now allocating an even greater portion of our innovation budget toward advancing ‘inside-out’ beauty,” Purvis said.
