CarobBiome launches anti-bloat eco prebiotic

‘Highly sustainable’ CarobBiome prebiotic fiber has been developed to deliver gut and metabolic benefits as well as complement GLP-1 diets.

CarobWay, an Israeli food tech firm focused on innovation with the sustainable, ancient ‘superfruit’ carob, has launched a prebiotic fiber, CarobBiome, as its foray into the gut health space.

Currently undergoing preclinical assessment, the ingredient provides naturally occurring antioxidants, polyphenols and prebiotic fibers with a neutral flavor for formulation within a range of functional food and drink.

“Not all prebiotics are equal,” said Udi Alroy, CEO and co-founder of CarobWay. “While many fibers on the market can cause some level of stomach discomfort, CarobBiome is specifically designed to ease bloating and maintain a happy tummy. Moreover, it is completely natural, vegan and allows for a clean, simple ingredients label. It also is highly nutritious.”

CarobBiome includes 85% soluble and insoluble fibers. Insoluble fibers are known for their role in regulating bowel functions, while soluble fibers provide a prebiotic and microbiome-balancing effect.

Prebiotics also play a role in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels.

Fiber a trending choice

According to an Innova Market Insights report, fiber ranks as the second leading functional ingredient of choice for consumers, following closely behind protein.

The ‘fibermaxxing’ TikTok trend further substantiates the wide consumer interest in the gut health benefits of fiber, especially among the younger demographic. The trend involves social media users sharing their attempts to hit and exceed daily fiber intake goals.

Alroy suggested the ingredient can also support those using GLP-1 agonist drugs.

“With increased focus on GLP-1 and digestive health topping consumer priorities, our prebiotic carob fiber offers a potent, natural solution for both trends,” he said.

“As GLP-1 users and those dieting in general are eating less, they need to be sure they are getting more from every bite they consume. This includes more nutrient-dense foods imbued with protein and fiber. CarobBiome is rich in fiber, making it an ideal support for GLP-1 diets, and it delivers valuable micronutrients.”

Soluble fiber helps slow digestion, contributing to the feeling of satiety thus aiding weight management. It also contributes to gut comfort due to its water-holding capacity and boosts beneficial bacteria. These beneficial bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which “nourish the gut” and support metabolic health and can stimulate the release of GLP-1, a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar levels.

Eco-friendly option

The ingredient is sourced from carob, a sustainable and resilient crop that thrives on non-arable, rocky lands where other crops cannot grow, Alroy explained.

It requires minimal water input and virtually no chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

“With low labor demands and natural resistance to pests and drought, carob enables cost-effective, regenerative agriculture even in marginal environments,” according to the firm.

As a deep-rooted, perennial tree it also contributes meaningfully to carbon sequestration while promoting long-term soil health and biodiversity.
