The collaboration sets the stage for an oral probiotic launch which will introduce beneficial bacteria to combat gingivitis, highlighting a shift towards preventive oral care.
To detail how this strain can help maintain a healthy oral microbiome, Dr. Abdelahhad Barbour, CEO of Ostia Sciences and Laurie Rey, Head of EXPERT’Biome CDMO by Lallemand, joined the NutraCast.
“Leveraging our lab and plant capacity, along with our experienced team, we supported Ostia Sciences from end-to-end in developing their next-generation probiotics. We chose to formulate lozenges, a dosage form particularly suited for slow dissolution in the mouth, which is the site of action for SALI-10,” said Rey.
With 69% of consumers showing interest in probiotics, the new probiotic aims to combat gingivitis through beneficial bacteria introduction. The collaboration focuses on creating a scalable, high-quality product that maintains stability throughout production.
The partnership also involves lab-scale production to identify the optimal bioprocess for balancing yield and viability and scaling up to 150L to validate process scalability and robustness. These developments have been produced at industrial scale in Lallemand’s French GMP pharma plant. Formulation trials were also conducted to develop lozenges and determine the appropriate overage based on stability data.
“We found that one of the strains in our laboratories produces a molecule that not only kills bad pathogens and spares the beneficial bacteria, but also has some immunomodulation activities. So we [took a] dive deep into the structure of this molecule and we found that it is phosphorylated lentibiotic, another type of lantipeptides,” Barbour explained.
After securing full intellectual property rights, Barbour said they are ready to advance their research and support the development of the SALI-10 probiotic to target oral and respiratory health.
Upcoming clinical trials aim to demonstrate the effectiveness of this new oral probiotic, with plans for market launch in North America and Europe by 2026.
