Athletes often rely on dietary supplements to take their performance up a notch, but poor quality supplements could also be what holds them back if they’re not vigilant. That’s where certification programs come in.

Eagle Diagnostics recently announced the launch of TruShield Certified, a program that tests for the presence of over 400 banned substances, including those found on the Amazon adulterated list, as well as compounds of concern that are critical for anti-doping compliance.

Lori Bestervelt, PhD, senior vice president of certification services at TruShield Certified’s Sports Medicine Research and Testing Lab, shared her insights gained from over two decades at NSF, highlighting how TruShield’s rigorous testing and established relationship with professional sports leagues uniquely positions it to fill a critical gap in athlete safety and product integrity.

“Our proven track record in anti-doping and banned substance detection has fueled our expansion into finished product testing,” she said. “It’s not just about testing—it’s about trust. Delivered by scientists with deep anti-doping expertise and the most current and relevant list of banned substances.”

When it comes to standing out from other certification programs, Bestervelt said she has access to the most up-to-date banned substance lists, reference standards and methods, allowing her to have a very rigorous testing program for banned substances.

“And since our focus is solely on banned substance testing, our program is very streamlined and affordable,” she said.

Bestervelt added that while there is awareness among Olympic and professional sports on some of the banned substances, collegiate level athletes are still a work in progress.

“The only way to know whether or not there’s a banned substance in your finished product, in your raw material [or] your new ingredient, is to actually do banned substance testing,” she said. “I’ll say also that for many athletes, especially on the collegiate level and with emerging pro sports…they’re not quite as aware as they are maybe with the Olympics and the professional sports on how easily contamination can occur.”
