These innovative early-stage start-ups will showcase their novel approaches to microbiome science, product development and health at the upcoming 2025 Probiota Americas, taking place June 9–11 at the Weston Bayshore Vancouver.
Now in its 10th year, the annual conference brings together stakeholders from across the microbiome ecosystem—including industry leaders, researchers, investors and regulatory experts—for three days of insights, networking and collaboration.
The Probiota Pioneer platform offers a glimpse into where the sector is headed, spotlighting emerging technologies, science and business models poised to shape the next generation of microbiome innovation.
Hydrosome Labs: Advancing water science and technology with ultrafine bubble technology
Hydrosome Labs, based in Chicago, specializes in ultrafine bubble (UFB) technology to “defy the limitations of conventional nanobubbles” by producing bubbles that are invisible to the naked eye (one trillion fit in one champagne bubble) and stay stable and active for over a year.
According to the company, the key difference is the nanobubbles’ capability to improve the delivery of vital ingredients such as nutrients, vitamins, gases (e.g. oxygen) and water to cells and tissues.
The platform technology has applications across industries and products—improving speed and yield of precision fermentation, delivering clean cosmetic and personal care ingredients, advancing plant growth and yield without pesticides and increasing the efficacy of functional beverages for improved hydration, nutrient uptake, sensory benefits and flavor modulation.
Preclinical trials have also demonstrated Hydrosome H2O’s ability to modify the gut microbiome, leading to increases in short chain fatty acids and decreases in inflammatory markers.
Nūmi: Advancing Infant Nutrition Through Cultivated Human Milk
Nūmi is a French biotechnology start-up specializing in the production of cultivated human milk to offer “new milk for healthier humans” as an alternative to traditional bovine-based infant formulas.
The cultivated milk contains bioactive molecules including human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), lactoferrin, taurine, DHA and ARA. These components are integral to infant development, supporting immunity, brain function and overall growth.
Nūmi’s production process involves isolating mammary cells, cultivating them under controlled conditions and harvesting the milk, which is then purified for safety and quality.
Trilliome: Precision Microbiome Solutions for Healthspan and Longevity
Zurich-based biotechnology company Trilliome is pioneering the development of plant-based prebiotic compounds to address the global health crisis resulting from modern lifestyle choices.
These extracts, sourced from lesser-known plants including superfruits, are designed to restore and optimize the gut microbiome, aligning the body’s natural symbiosis with these microorganisms to support healthy aging.
As an alternative to broad-spectrum approaches, Trilliome is integrating microbiome research with targeted product development to modulate specific bacterial populations strains linked to improved brain health, digestion and immunity.
The company is also dedicated to partnering with suppliers that prioritize sustainable harvesting practices and ensuring fair trade practices and ethical labor standards along the supply chain.
