NutraCast: Women’s health is taking over Citruslabs

The company’s CEO said women are so keen to become study participants that the CRO regularly has to turn away volunteers–and not everyone is taking it well.

As the stigma around topics like PMS, menopause and sexual wellness slowly fades, an accelerated consumer demand is emerging. We’re hearing more open and positive conversations about these areas and if you walked the floor at Expo West recently, you likely saw a lot more targeted solutions that cater to women’s health needs.

But in order for these products to succeed, they need scientific validation. That’s where Citruslabs comes in, a Santa Monica-based CRO.

“Women's health has been moreless neglected by traditional Western medicine. And now, we are seeing more conversations happening around women's health, topics like PMS, menopause, sexual wellness and most of it is really coming down to the booming wellness industry. Several supplements are targeting PMS symptoms like mood swings, hormonal acne, we also have seen products that support period pain, that support cycle regularity and then going one step ahead, a lot of them are now starting to look at menopause and helping to alleviate, for example, frequencies with hot flashes, helping with sleep, something that many women unfortunately struggle with,” said Citruslabs CEO and co-founder, Susanne Mitschke.

Mitschke only sees the category growing, as more women recognize the benefits of these targeted solutions while companies recognize the opportunity.

“It's an agenda that women are pushing and we are now getting our voices heard, and that is a really good thing. And this is why we're getting more funding in women's health, but also because I think that the whole Wellness industry really made this happen because now we have supplements and even though they are not drugs, they do help women with their symptoms. And I think this is a really great step in the right direction,” said Mitschke.
