Along with developing the science and marketing story behind an ingredient, suppliers also need to ensure those ingredients are easy to work with. A prominent vitamin K2 supplier says it has done just that with a new, stability-enhanced version of branded version.

The new offering from Gnosis by Lessafre is a form of its menaquinone ingredient called vitaMK7 Matrix.  The stability of the ingredient has been enhanced by something the company calls a ‘matrix carrier.’

The ingredient has been successfully traded on the market for a number of years, so it’s not as if suffered from debilitating stability issues before.  But up to now using it in some products that might contain mineral salts was a delicate process that demanded careful, time consuming formulation development time.  The new ingredient will be much more of a plug-and-play option, said Xavier Berger, Global Market Manager at Gnosis by Lesaffre

Allowing for greater flexibility in formulation

Our new technology gives brand owners and contract manufacturing organizations the ease of creating more complex formulations in a smoother, more predictable process, allowing innovative, quality products to hit the market much faster,” he said.

“Stability is not such an issue when formulating vitamin K2 ingredient as a standalone or combination product. It is when you start to introduce ingredients with moisture or mineral salts, such as calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide, where achieving and maintain stability becomes a more cumbersome – but achievable – process. This new technology takes much of the labor out of the process, allowing manufacturers and brand owners to make exciting new products a reality,” Berger added.

According to the company, adding the matrix carrier feature will allow:

  • Improved homogeneity of the powder, making it easier to handle and formulate
  • Best in class stability, especially with mineral complexes
  • Ability for formulas to keep a short and unchanged list of ingredients with no additives.

Berger said the new matrix enhanced ingredient will function well in traditional solid dosage formats.  But as it is highly dispersible it is suitable for liquids and powders as well.  An additional benefit is that formulators can go with a lower overage quantity of vitaMK7 and still meet label claim at the end of a product’s shelf life, Berger said.
