Here in the NutraVerse, it’s pretty hard to go very long without hearing or reading about the gut microbiome. Interest in the topic has helped to drive the digestive health category as a whole. However, when it comes to this complex community inside the gut, scientists often have more questions than answers. What is known is that diet impacts the microbiota, and our overall health.
To offer some context to the topic, we spoke with Dr. Dan Gubler, a Caltech-trained natural product chemist who is a phytonutrient expert who has formulated more than 200 supplements.
Studies have found that guts lacking diversity are associated with health issues such as Parkinson's disease and autoimmune diseases. We asked Dr. Gubler if the diversity in someone's gut microbiome is an indicator of overall health.
"It is, yeah, from the recent research we're seeing. Diversity of the good bacteria in the gut, collectively known as the microbiome, is key. And when you look at human health, diversity is key in everything. The body performs millions of chemical reactions every single second and it relies on several different systems in order to maintain homeostasis and balance. What we're finding is that the microbiome is one of the major players in the systems."
Dr. Gubler also explains the three pillars of health and how to maintain a healthy microbiome. To hear what he suggests, take a listen.
