Council for Responsible Nutrition announces staff promotions

The dietary supplements and functional foods trade group Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) announced four staff promotions.

CRN has promoted Jim Griffiths, Ph.D., to Senior Vice President, International & Scientific Affairs; Sandra Khouri to Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration; Carl Hyland to Vice President, Membership Development; and William Dumais to Government Relations Associate.

“These four staff promotions recognize each person’s professional growth, dedication to their respective field, and diligence in contributing to CRN’s overall mission and strategic plan,”​ said Steve Mister, president & CEO, CRN. “I am grateful for the hard work and talent of these individuals, and I look forward to watching them continue to grow their capabilities.”

Jim Griffiths, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, International & Scientific Affairs

Dr. Griffiths began working at CRN in 2012 as the Vice President, Scientific & International affairs. He is primarily responsible for CRN’s science-based international policy and regulatory work, and is the CRN staff liaison for CRN-International (CRN-I).

Dr. Griffiths also plays an integral role in CRN’s science department by providing scientific expertise for evaluating proposed policy and regulatory actions. Dr. Griffiths serves as CRN’s primary representative at Codex Alimentarious meetings at the International Alliance of Dietary Supplement Associations (IADSA) conference, and at other international events related to industry regulation and nutrition policy outside of the U.S. During his time at CRN, Dr. Griffiths has monitored regulatory proposals, especially those that would affect the international trade of dietary supplements and functional foods, and prepared comprehensive comments or other responses reflecting the industry position on safety, effectiveness, and labeling of dietary and nutritional supplements and functional foods.

Prior to joining CRN, he spent five years with the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) where he managed food and dietary supplement strategic initiatives, including those related to global food and dietary supplement alliances. Dr. Griffiths received a B.A. in biology from Columbia Union College in Maryland, earned his Ph.D. in Toxicology from Rutgers University & Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, and completed post-doctoral training at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Sandra Khouri, Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration

Ms. Khouri joined CRN in 2011 as the Director of Operations. She was promoted to Senior Director, Finance & Administration in 2014 and then to Vice President in 2016. Ms. Khouri is responsible for supervising and implementing all aspects of CRN’s finance, human resources and IT office functions.

As the head of finance and accounting at CRN, she oversees the preparation of financial statements, quarterly Board reporting, annual budget, and audit. Ms. Khouri manages CRN’s investments and all other financial aspects of CRN’s structure. As head of human resources, she administers all staffing and benefits at CRN.

Prior to joining CRN, Ms. Khouri served in several organization management roles, most recently as the administrator of Memphis, Tennessee-based law firm Spicer Rudstrom. Ms. Khouri holds a B.S. in Accounting and an M.B.A., both from the University of Louisville.

Carl Hyland, Vice President, Membership Development

Mr. Hyland started working at CRN in 2011 as the Director of Membership Development. He was previously promoted to Senior Director, Membership Development in 2016. Mr. Hyland is responsible for overseeing all aspects of membership services, including member recruitment and retention.

At CRN, he manages the CRN new member mentor program with CRN’s Board of Directors, coordinates the Board election process, and leads the annual membership renewal process. In addition, Mr. Hyland provides support for member education programming, including webinars, and online and in-person education, and conference management.

Mr. Hyland was editor of the natural health magazine, Let’s LIVE, and Vice President, Corporate Development for Weider/Schiff Nutrition, Inc. He received his B.A. in English from the University of California at Berkeley.

William Dumais, Government Relations Associate

Mr. Dumais started at CRN in 2017 as the Government Relations Assistant. He is responsible for providing technical and administrative support to CRN’s government relations department. Mr. Dumais coordinates educational briefings and advocacy events on Capitol Hill, works to build relationships with legislative offices, and plays a significant role in planning and carrying out CRN’s annual lobbying effort: “Day on the Hill.” He recently graduated from Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island with a B.A. in Political Science and English.
