Global gelatin company Nitta Gelatin launched DRG Gelatin, an ingredient for soft gels designed specifically to inhibit cross-linkage reactions.

“Cross-linkage reactions act to inhibit solubility, thereby reducing the efficacy of the drug or supplement contained within,” according to the company.

Some manufacturing processes and ingredients have been observed to encourage cross-linkages, which creates solubility and shelf-life issues. These include products with high aldehyde, caramel color, or fish oil content.

DRG Gelatin was designed to contain and protect the active ingredients in a capsule, promoting rapid solubility following ingestion.

The ingredient is available in both porcine and bovine source materials. It works to contain and protect the active ingredients in a variety of dietary supplements, OTC medications, and pharmaceuticals. The company said it was designed to meet consumer ‘clean label’ expectations, delivering the same gel strength as traditional gelatin.
