French botanicals giant Naturex has debuted a cranberry extract – most typically aimed at women with urinary tract infection (UTI) issues - marketed at with elderly men with similar problems.

The extract – called Flowens – targets over 50s with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) typically associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). About 50% of men in their 50s and 80% of men in their 70s suffer from BPH, in the US at least.

Naturex cited a double-blind, randomised, placebo controlled intervention study using a daily dose of either 250mg or 500mg that showed statistically significant improvements in the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) along with post-void residual volume (PRV) and bladder volume (VOL).

Dan Souza, director of sales and marketing at Naturex, and formerly of Decas Botanical Synergies which was acquired by Naturex last year, said research had shown a lack of, “unwanted sexual side effects commonly associated with pharmaceutical drugs and the current phytotherapy.”

Also debuting at Supply Side West in Las Vegas this week is a Naturex herbal product to promote post-prandial blood sugar control, with the 366m global diabetics in mind. It is backed by 3 clinical studies, Naturex said.

Called Glucevia, it is extracted from seeds and fruits taken from the common ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior).

“Naturex was able to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of this unique extract on blood sugar control via in vitro, in vivo and 3 clinical studies,” said Elizabeth Bui, Naturex Nutrition & Health business unit director.

Glucevia is a patented extract standardised to 10% Nuzhenide and GI3. The latest study showed that post-prandial glycemia expressed as Area Under the Curve (AUC) was reduced by 28.2% versus baseline.
