With more than half of consumers in developed countries over the age of 14 now classified as overweight or obese, and obesity rates in China and India expected to double by 2020, global interest in weight management products “will likely remain high for the foreseeable future”, says Euromonitor International.

But what approaches are gaining momentum?

And do diet plans developed in the US appeal to consumers in other markets?

To answer this question, Euromonitor International survey analyst Lisa Holmes quizzed its 250 in-house researchers based in more than 80 countries to gauge which diets are popular in the regions they cover.

The results showed that approaches varied considerably in different markets, with some diets such as the Paleo diet proving very popular in the US, but barely registering in some other regions, while the Atkins diet is now more popular in Asia-Pacific and Latin America than in the US and Europe.

“Weight Watchers, currently the most favored global diet, was founded in the 1960s in the US and remains a popular choice for American consumers, as well as those in Europe and Latin America", said Holmes.

"In contrast, Jenny Craig, another American-based weight loss plan, has failed to gain widespread popularity outside of the US.

“Other options such as the Fast Diet, which encourages intermittent fasting, and the Dukan diet, a protein-based eating plan, are much more popular in Europe than elsewhere.”
