Dutch ingredients giant DSM is launching a dry powder form of its Fruitflow tomato extract which has an EFSA-approved health claim for improved blood circulation – attained in 2009.

DSM says a dose of 150mg of the new form is suitable for soft gels, capsules, tablets and stick packs.

The ingredient is also GRAS-approved in the US and joins vitamins and minerals and omega-3s in DSM’s heart health portfolio.

Other forms of fruitflow are used in juices such as Sirco which was recently given a makeover in the UK.

“Cardiovascular health is one of the biggest consumer health concerns out there, with many people turning to dietary supplements as a drug-free and effective way of looking after their hearts,” commented Wouter Nieboer, Fruitflow global marketing manager.

“Many heart health products available today only address blood pressure or cholesterol. Fruitflow, on the other hand, is one of the only ingredients to address healthy blood circulation, with the new powder format opening up a world of commercial opportunity to dietary supplement brand owners.

“Our qualitative consumer research has shown that dietary supplements are the preferred way for consumers to enjoy Fruitflow, and we have already received much interest from brand owners.”

Fruitflow works by inhibiting clumping of blood platelets and is aimed at healthy adults between the ages of 35 and 70 who are disposed to cardiovascular disease.

The ingredient was developed by DSM’s commercial partner, UK firm Provexis, but is being developed by DSM as Provexis has turned its attention to the Science in Sport (SiS) supplements company it acquired for £8m (€9.45m) in 2011.

Nieboer added: “With in-depth consumer insights and extensive formulation expertise, we can be with customers at every stage of the NPD process. One key way we can add value is by helping to create on-pack messaging that communicates the unique benefits of Fruitflow in a way that is compelling for consumers.”

DSM is debuting the ingredient this week at Vitafoods Europe in Geneva.
