Regulatory momentum to continue for dietary supplements industry: CRN’s Mister

The results of the recent elections mean that it’s business as usual for the dietary supplements industry, and the defeat of Prop 37 in California is not the end of the genetically engineered food issue, says Steve Mister, President and CEO of CRN.

Speaking with NutraIngredients-USA at SupplySide West in Las Vegas, the Council for Responsible Nutrition’s (CRN) Mister said that the results of the elections means, “we’ll continue to have four more years of divided government”.

“We’ll continue a lot of emphasis on regulation, and that was the first four years of the Obama administration. I think we’ll continue to see that and I don’t think we’ll see a dramatic ramping up.”

On the rejection of Prop 37 in California, Mister said “we will have to continue to grapple with this issue of genetically engineered food. Does it pose any kind of harm to the environment or to consumers that we will to label with.

“What is clear from California is that that particular ballot initiative was not the right one. We looked at it at CRN because of all the litigation it would have spurred and the incentives for private enforcement.

“I think other states will now look at it. We’re likely to see legislatures or ballot initiatives in nearby states and California may revisit it.”
