CRN-I heads to Germany for 3rd scientific symposium in December
Taking place at the Schlosshotel Kronberg, the symposium - Nutrient Reference Values for Bioactives? —New Approaches - will bring together regulators, policymakers, nutrition scientists and academics to discuss nutrition issues related to the activities of the Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses at standards body Codex Alimentarius.
Its purpose is “to advance the understanding of the relevant science to the regulatory and policy-setting community of Codex”, said John Hathcock, Ph.D., senior vice president, scientific and international affairs, CRN-I.
The symposium will feature a keynote address on the framework and definitions of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) from John Erdman, Ph.D., University of Illinois.
Dr. Erdman was previously a member of the IOM standing committee on the scientific evaluation of DRIs for essential nutrients.
His talk will focus on how the IOM DRI framework may be adapted for establishing nutrient reference values for bioactives.
Other speakers include:
• Prof. Hans Biesalski, University of Hohenheim, addressing intervention and epidemiological data that can be used to establish nutrient reference values
• Kathleen Ellwood, Ph.D on the use of dietary intake patterns for healthy persons to identify adequate intakes
• Stephen Beatty, M.D. and Elizabeth Johnson, Ph.D. , who will cover lutein and zeaxanthin
• Roberto Marchioli, M.D and Lotte Lauritzen, Ph.D. on omega-3 fatty acids
• The CRN-I’s Dr. John Hathcock on safety considerations that should be evaluated when establishing government-recommended intakes for nutrients
