A new product combining probiotics and organic spirulina, claimed to stimulate the growth of Lactobacillus bacteria, will be launched at the Natural Products Expo West trade event in Anaheim, California in March.

To be sold as Probiogreen, the new product combines DDS probiotics from UAS Laboratories with organic spirulina from Valensa and Parry Nutraceuticals.

Probiogreen has already shown promising results in a recent clinical study on patients with irritable bowel syndrome, according to UAS.

Multiple ingredient supplements

Probiogreen will be available as a finished product or as a raw material which can either be added to food products or used in multiple-ingredient supplements.

Applications include supplement powders, smoothie mixes, beverages, and supplements, said UAS.

The recommended dosage of the product is 500 mg of DDS probiotics (5 billion CFU/gram) and 500 mg of Spirulina. The dose is contained in quarter teaspoon (1 gm) compared with many green formula products which use up to four teaspoons of ingredients, claimed the company.

Made from the microscopic aquatic organism spirulina, Parry Spirulina has a protein content of more than 60 per cent and has received generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status for its Arthrospira platensis.

The product is used as a nutraceutical ingredient with a combination of phytonutrients such as phycocyanin, carotenes, xanthophylls, GLA, essential fatty acids, vitamin B12, chlorophyll and minerals, said Parry Nutraceuticals.

It is produced in accordance with good manufacturing practice (GMP) and is certified organic by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program ( NOP).

Age-related health

Health benefits are said to include many age-related health conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, neurodegenerative disorders and cardiovascular disease.

DDS Probiotics, produced by UAS Laboratories, based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, is said to maintain healthy flora and promote intestinal health.

“The Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 strain, that is the foundation of all UAS Labs’ probiotic blends, has over 200 university and clinical studies that demonstrate its efficacy in a wide range of health conditions,” according to the company.

Valensa International is the official US agent for Parry Spirulina.

Natural Products Expo West trade show takes place at the Annaheim Convention Center, Annaheim, California between March 11 -13, 2011.
