Canadian nutritional oil company Bioriginal Food & Science has introduced a stabilized, organic, omega-3-rich flax flour, the first of its kind on the market, according to the company.

BakOmega is designed to increase the omega-3 content of baked foods. The launch has been prompted by the growing consumer demand for health foods.

The finely-ground flax flour is said to have improved functionality, stability and taste and is produced by a proprietary process developed by Bioriginal over the past year. The product also contains many vitamins and minerals, fibre and lignins, thought to help protect against heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancers.

Bioriginal also processes natural oils high in essential fatty acids, including borage, evening primrose, black currant, flax, and fish. Sold in soft gel capsules, bottles, bulk oils and powders, the ingredients are used in nutritional supplements, functional foods and cosmetics.
