Cereal maker Organic Milling has launched a new high-protein, low carbohydrate cereal under the Back to Nature brand.

Hi-Lo cereal has been formulated specifically as a weight-loss, and healthy product. Each serving of the cereal contains 14 grams of protein (from soy), 12 grams of carbohydrates and less than 1 gram of sugar.

The Californian company is launching the product across the nation and billing it as either breakfast or a snack food. It is also suitable for diabetics.

Organic Milling claims that Hi-Lo has the lowest carbohydrate count of any weight-loss cereal on the market, containing roughly half the amount of its closest competitor. It has only 100 calories per serving and contains less than one-fifth the sugar of the closest weight-loss cereal competitors, like Kashi GoLEAN and Kellogg's Special K with Red Berries.

The product also contains soy isoflavones and natural antioxidants derived from rosemary extract and Vitamin E which may inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure, reducing cardiovascular disease, according to the manufacturers.

A 5 gram-fiber contribution means consumers feel more full and helps weight loss.

Hi-Lo is available at natural product and grocery stores nationwide, including Kroger, Trader Joe's and selected Whole Foods stores. The Back to Nature range of granolas and cereals includes Hi-Protein, Ultra-Flax and other natural cereals.
