Vitamin maker Athena is introducing an effervescent multivitamin for pregnant women, claimed to be easier to ingest than capsule vitamins. Called PreOne Prenatal Formula, the product is designed to raise compliance with the nutritional needs of expecting mothers.

Athena Natural Effervescent Vitamins are made from powdered vitamins that fizz when mixed with water. Effervescent supplements are thought to offer better nutrient absorption than traditional capsule and pill vitamins.

The vitamin was formulated by company founder Dr Michelle Hillis while she was pregnant and searching for a prenatal supplement that was easy to ingest.

Dr Hillis said: "Although we learn more every day about the importance of nutrition and prenatal health, especially in the first trimester, prenatal nutritional compliance is very low. In many regards it is a hidden crisis. Many women who are seemingly taking a prenatal supplement are in reality unable to swallow the capsules every day or are unable to retain the nutrients. The ease of ingestion and fast absorption of PreOne is targeted at addressing these issues."

PreOne will be introduced nationwide to retailers at the Natural Products Expo West show, taking place from March 6-9 in Anaheim, California. The company will also launch its CalMate Calcium Magnesium Blend at the show.

Athena supplements are distributed to physicians by Natural Partners and to retailers by Select Nutrition, Mountain Peoples Warehouse and Azure Standard.
