Minneapolis-based Cargill Health and Food Technologies (H&FT) has launched a new chondritin sulfate ingredient for use in dietary supplements and health products. The company claims OptaFlex is the first solvent-free chondroitin sulfate derived from 100 per cent North American sources.

"Through proprietary technology we are able to produce this natural chondroitin sulfate without the use of traditional solvents," said Ted Ziemann, president of Cargill Health & Food Technologies.

Steve Snyder, director sales and marketing at H&FT, said: "OptaFlex is an innovative product that will provide a point of differentiation for our customers. We believe dietary supplement manufacturers will recognize the value a North American-sourced, solvent-free premium chondroitin sulfate can bring to their products."

"Chondroitin sulfate/glucosamine has been the number one specialty supplement for the past five years, according to the Nutrition Business Journal Supplement Business Report 2002," said Roberta Rosenberg, director of marketing research at H&FT. "OptaFlex will complement Cargill's Regenasure, a non-shellfish glucosamine product being launched next year."

Cargill Health & Food Technologies is a business unit of Cargill, an international processor and distributor of agricultural, food, financial and industrial products and services.
