American natural supplement brand Schiff is introducing a revised formulation of its Knock-Out product.

The new formulation contains valerian, melatonin and L-theanine to promote relaxation and support normal sleep patterns, said the company. There is no kava in the compound.

"Consumers continue to look for natural ways to promote sleep and relaxation," said Naomi Keller, vice president of marketing for Schiff.

"We've reformulated our Knock-Out product with L-theanine, which is the primary component of green tea, to complement the original ingredients, valerian and melatonin, to provide a calming effect without the concerns related to Kava."

One tablet of Schiff Knock-Out contains 100 milligrams of valerian extract, 50 milligrams of L-theanine, three milligrams of melatonin and 0.8 milligrams of valerenic acids. Consumers are advised to take one tablet of Schiff Knock-Out at bedtime.

Valerian, a herb frequently used as a soothing tea, is also used as a sleep aid. Melatonin is a metabolic hormone made in the pineal gland. It is released into the blood stream to set the body's biological clock and initiate sleep. Darkness stimulates the pineal gland and causes it to produce more melatonin.

"Theanine is a calming component of green tea, long revered by Asians," said Dr Luke Bucci, vice president of research for Schiff. "Human studies have confirmed that theanine can induce a calm but alert state. In fact, theanine, which is an amino acid, can be a precursor for GABA, one of the brain neurotransmitters involved in feelings of relaxation and sleep initiation."

The reformulated Schiff Knock-Out will be available in the US from late Summer.

The Schiff brand, known for its Move Free joint care supplements, is owned by Weider Nutrition, a manufacturer and marketer of branded and private label vitamins, nutritional supplements and sports nutrition products.
