Metabolife, the US-based dietary supplement maker, is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service amid allegations that it has been evading income tax payments.

Agents from the IRS raided Metabolife's headquarters this week and removed documents related to the accusations, according to the Associated Press.

The report said that about 40 IRS investigators spent most of Wednesday at Metabolife's HQ, and workers were sent home when they arrived at work. Metabolife said in a statement that it was co-operating with the tax investigation, which did not involve any of its products.

This is not the only controversy to surround Metabolife in recent months. The company is already facing a court case surrounding its Metabolife 356 weight loss product containing ephedra, in which plaintiffs claim that the company acted irresponsibly by selling the potentially dangerous product without warnings. Ephedra is thought to cause problems such as heart attacks and strokes.
