Predator Nutrition, a top selling sports nutrition brand in Europe, has been caught in the FDA/FTC coronavirus net, having received a warning letter for illegal COVID-19 treatment claims.

Predator Nutrition, a UK-based online supplement marketer, has had run-ins with regulators in the past, in particular connected to the sale of products containing DMAA and a fat burner called Dexaprine.  In the warning letter posted recently, FDA takes the company to task over claims made on immune support products that feature a variety of herbal and other ingredients.

Synthetic peptide included in warning

FDA said Predator Nutrition was using language on its site such as the following:

“Natural Ingredients Used in Treating Covid-19. Doubtless, over time we will learn more about what works best for treating Covid-19 but for now, with widespread adoption in numerous countries of a combined pharmaceutical and nutraceutical approach, we think it best to focus on prevention and investing your efforts on those products with the strongest evidence base.”

Among the ingredients mentioned are:

  • Berberine
  • Salidroside (an active constituent found in Rhodiola rosea)
  • Oxymatrine (an alkaloid found in Sephora japonica roots)
  • Ecklonia cava (an edible marine brown algae)
  • BPC-157, a synthetic peptide.

Predator Nutrition seems to have complied with the 48-hour window given in such warning letters. The company still has a ‘Coronavirus and Immune Support’ directory listing but the link shows ‘Page not Found.’

Special warning for foreign firms

FDA also included this special warning:

“If you are not located in the United States, please note that products that appear to be misbranded or unapproved new drugs are subject to detention and refusal of admission if they are offered for importation into the United States. We may advise the appropriate regulatory officials in the country from which you operate that FDA considers your product(s) referenced above to be unapproved and misbranded products that cannot be legally sold to consumers in the United States.”
