GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It serves as a balancer during periods of over-excitation, helping to reduce mental and physical stress and increase focus. While GABA is produced naturally in the brain, supplementation or the consumption of foods high in glutamine or theanine can help bolster production.
Research published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition and BioFactors shows respectively that chocolate enriched with GABA had a psychological stress-reducing effect on its test subjects and increased relaxation and immunity while reducing anxiety.
