Our eyes are protected by macular pigment, which is composed of two dietary nutrients, lutein and zeaxanthin. These nutrients are naturally deposited as a protective layer in the macula. The third constituent of the macula is meso-zeaxanthin, which is converted by the body from lutein. To date there has been no research on the eye health benefits of using supplemental meso-zeaxanthin alone without the presence of dietary lutein and zeaxanthin. Because of this, it is very difficult to attribute the positive effects to meso-zeaxanthin alone.
