PharmaLinea’s back pain product improves effects of physical therapy: Study
Published in the journal Family Medicine and Primary Care: Open Access, the research explored the effects of ProHumano+ SpineDinamic (PHSD), a supplement developed by PharmaLinea, alongside physical therapy on lumbosacral radicular syndrome (LRS), a condition that affects the lower back.
PHSD, based on PharmaLinea’s proprietary complex, Qspine, contains natural ingredients such as B vitamins and Vitamin D. These components may mitigate inflammation and nerve damage in the spine.
Importantly, some analgesics which are prescribed for LRS can cause side effects, however results showed PHSD caused no side effects or addiction.
“The outcome of the trial means they now finally have a safe solution, which significantly improves the effects of physical therapy,” said Matevž Ambrožič, marketing director at PharmaLinea.
Lower back pain
Despite being the leading cause of disability worldwide, the global health agenda fails to prioritize lower back pain, and studies suggest that recommendations for the treatment of LRS are varying and inconsistent.
“They mostly target symptom relief, not the cause of the issue,” said Ambrožič.
LRS can occur due to degenerative changes such as disc herniation or spondylolisthesis, causing pain resulting from compression or inflammation of nerve roots in the lumbosacral region of the spine.
“Consumers are increasingly searching for natural alternatives to address their pain in the lower back area,” said Ambrožič.
“Many industry experts agree that pain is the next big white space in supplements.”
Study details
Researchers from Filantropia Clinical Municipal Hospital Craiova and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova in Romania performed a prospective, double-blind, randomized study on 247 participants with LRS.
The participants were mostly overweight, between 50 and 79 years old, and had a disability status in Activities of Daily Living (A.D.L).
The study explored the effects of the supplement—commercially named >Your< Back Pain Capsules—or a placebo daily for three months, alongside 10 sessions of a physical rehabilitation program.
Each PHSD capsule contained 75.3 mg of Qspine, a proprietary formulation consisting of nucleotide complex and vitamins B1, B6, B12 and D3 supplied by PharmaLinea Ltd. in Slovenia.
PHSD showed a 51% improvement in physical therapy's pain-relieving effect and a 52% increase in physical therapy's mobility improvement compared to placebo.
The authors highlight how B vitamins and vitamin D can support musculoskeletal health and neuropathic pain control while modulating neuroinflammation.
“We think that the overall composition of Qspine is the one that makes the difference," Maja Orešnik, science and research director at Pharmalinea, told NutraIngredients. “The combination of selected vitamins and other ingredients that complement each other, and usage in the population that can benefit.”
Orešnik noted that further research should explore the effect of the supplementation in populations with different pathologies, the combination of supplementation and medical treatment, and the long-term effect of the supplement once the intervention is completed.
