Mikra Cellular Sciences, a subsidiary of Canada-based Lifeist Wellness, has partnered with Virun NutraBiosciences to evolve its nutraceutical gel for cellular health support.

The new Cellf 2.0 version launched this month, packaging its CoQ10, Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ) and glutathione ingredients in a liposomal delivery system with an enhanced taste and price point.

“As it happens, the three active ingredients in Cellf are difficult to formulate in a palatable way, and our unwavering commitment to the highest quality had meant correspondingly higher manufacturing costs for Mikra, until now,” said Lifeist CEO Meni Morim. “Thanks to Virun's optimized production expertise and fully vertically-integrated manufacturing process, for the first time, Mikra is able to offer our customers deep discounts on multi-month subscriptions.”

Priced at $98 for a one-time, 30-day supply, consumers can receive up to a 46% discount on a $1,176 yearly subscription.

To improve palatability, Virun’s bicarbonate downstream process enables removal of bad flavors and potential oxidative residue while promoting the good flavor in supplement formulations. Additionally, the almond butter is used as a base to create “delicious supplements” supported by Virun’s creamy edible emulsions patent, said Philip Bromley, CEO of Virun NutraBiosciences.

Harnessing the right formulation

Mikra researchers relied on hundreds of peer-reviewed clinical trials to formulate the right doses and proportions for the original Cellf product, Morim said.

PQQ, a vitamin-like compound found naturally in the soil and in some foods, can increase brain function and cognition in adults 20 to 65 years old. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed that 20 mg per day for 12 weeks improved composite and verbal memory. Evidence suggests that glutathione, an antioxidant made from three amino acids glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid is a causative factor in increased healthspan and lifespan among older adults with already strong physical and mental health. CoQ10 is known for improving energy, helping the immune system and serving as an antioxidant.

“Virun’s intellectual property technologies assist in allowing the glutathione, PQQ and CoQ10 and other encapsulated nutrients to absorb the gut mucosa so that it can be delivered to blood plasma,” Bromley said.

Improving bioavailability

Expanding on Bromley’s point about absorption, Morim said all three active ingredients in Cellf 2.0 are relatively delicate molecules.

“If they are simply taken orally in capsule (solid powder) form, all three will be substantially degraded and denatured by stomach acid before they ever reach the small intestine,” he added. “Leveraging Virun's patented liposomal gel delivery technology, all three active ingredients are protected from the stomach acid and reach the small intestine intact, where they can be absorbed and shuttled directly to your cells in their intended, most highly bioavailable form.”

Moreover, Virun’s bicarbonate downstream process deodorizes nutrients and discards potential oxidants from the supplement, removing the need for potentially toxic preservatives. It also eliminates water in the creation process.

“The fact that Virun can create lipid encapsulated supplements without using water means that the glutathione in Cellf 2.0 retains its activity and therefore does not prematurely deactivate—unlike the majority of glutathione supplements which contain water,” Bromley said.
