A proprietary blend of extracts of pomegranate and cocoa may increase testosterone levels, improve grip strength, and improved other measures of ageing in healthy men, says a new study from India.

Eight weeks of supplementation with LN18178 (Tesnor), a proprietary composition manufactured by India-based Laila Nutraceuticals, led to improvements in aging males' symptoms (AMS), a way of scoring age-related declines in physical, psychological, and sexual functions.

Supplementation with 200 or 400 mg per day doses of LN18178 also led to increases in total testosterone levels of 21.4% and 24.6%, respectively, and increases in free testosterone of 39.2% and 48.3%, respectively, from baseline

“This is the first report demonstrating the benefits of a standardized, herbal blend of [Punica granatum fruit rind] rind and [Theobroma cocoa] seed extracts (LN18178) in improving AMS [Aging males' symptoms], TT [total testosterone], FT [free testosterone], and muscular strength in aging men,” wrote scientists in the PubMed-listed International Journal of Medical Sciences.

Building the science

The study adds to the benefits for male health for the ingredient. Another paper, published earlier this year in the Journal of Dietary Supplements, explored the testosterone-boosting benefits of the blend in young men (aged 21-35).

The new study included 120 men aged between 36 and 55 who were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Placebo, 200 mg per day of Tesnor, or 400 mg per day of Tesnor.

After 56 days of intervention, the results showed that total AMS scored decreased by 15.5% and 19.3% in the 200 mg and 400 mg Tesnor groups, respectively, while scores decreased by only 4.6% in the placebo group.

Improvements were also seen in the AMS subscales for physical, psychological, and sexual behavior, compared to baseline.

Significant changes in free and total testosterone were also observed for the two LN18178 groups compared to placebo, said the researchers.

Grip strength improved gradually over the course of the trial, said the researchers, increasing by 19% and 24.6% from baseline for the 200 mg and 400 mg doses, respectively.

Significant improvements in perceived stress were also reported by the researchers, compared to placebo.

“This study suggests that LN18178 attenuates the severity of AMS, boosts serum testosterone levels, and improves the psychological, sexual, and general well-being of healthy aging men. LN18178 also increases muscular strength and reduces stress,” wrote the researchers. “LN18178 is a well-tolerated, safe, and effective nutraceutical blend that boosts sexual function, testosterone level, and psychological and general well-being in aging males.”
