NutraCast: Improving lifespan via ‘zombie cell’ elimination

Senescent cells accumulate with age and are associated with many disease states people experience later in life. Over time, these cells stop dividing but do not die off, which is hw they earned the nickname "zombie cells.” Researchers believe that these cells have a lot to do with advanced aging and scientists are racing to find solutions that could dramatically help improve one’s health span, or how long someone lives without the threat of disease and chronic illnesses

A new study out of Japan claims senescent cells, also known as “zombie cells,” can be eliminated by a new vaccine that reportedly creates antibodies that attach themselves to senescent cells, allowing them to be removed by white blood cells. However, Greg Macpherson, founder SRW Labs and author of “Harnessing the Nine Hallmarks of Aging” says no vaccine is required. The tools to eliminate “zombie cells” already exist in nature.

“The burden of senescent cells is quite significant and the research around it is showing that if you take a senescent cell and transplant it from an old animal into a young animal, the young animal starts to exhibit signs of some of the diseases of old age. So it's a really strong area of research and a really strong area of potential and it is strongly linked to inflammaging, so it's quite possible that we can remove the senescent cells and remove the inflammation burden, and the benefits are quite significant,” said Macpherson. “So it's a really strong target for researchers.”
