Naturex, a plant extraction and ingredient developer, has obtained self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) designation for its turmeric extract, Turmipure Gold.

A GRAS expert panel of independent scientists gathered last month to evaluate Turmipure Gold, a turmeric ingredient. The panel unanimously deemed Turmipure Gold as recognized as safe under the conditions of intended use in a wide range of food categories including beverages at both intuitive and effective doses. Additionally, the panel stated that it had no questions regarding Turmipure Gold safe use in food applications, including beverages.

Going for the gold

The status allows Turmipure Gold to be safely used in a wide array of American food and beverage applications for turmeric extract standardized in curcumin. The ingredient is now authorized for both intuitive and

effective daily intake in categories that include beverage and beverage bases, confectionery products, dairy, and dairy analogs.

According to Naturex, an effective 300mg dose of Turmipure Gold can now be incorporated in a single functional 2oz shot drink. The ingredient’s increased bioavailability allows for a single 300mg serving to deliver the same amount of curcuminoids to the blood as 1922mg of standard turmeric (containing 95% curcuminoids), allowing food and beverage manufacturers to offer tangible benefits to their consumers.

Taking it to the next level

Alexis Manfré, Global Product Manager for Turmipure Gold at Naturex, spoke about lending the ingredient to food and beverage applications at SupplySide West. Turmipure Gold is our main flagship ingredient at this trade show, it’s our latest innovation. We came out with a new solution because we found out that even if turmeric has become the number one botanical on the supplement market, there is still a lot of space for growth and extending to new markets such as food and beverages. We found out there is still a lot of room for innovation, and one of them was about achieving the best efficacy at the lowest dose, because when you look at all the ingredients on the market, we could still see improvements were needed."

Turmipure Gold is formulated to be easily blended into food and beverage applications. Naturex said it is also available in organic certified grade, provides instant water-dispersibility, a low effective dose, neutral taste, and appealing color. The plant extraction and ingredient developer added that it offers robust stability of curcuminoids to heat and light, including in beverages.

In a statement, Manfré said, “We are very pleased to receive the GRAS designation, allowing us to bring the benefits of Turmipure Gold to the US Food & Beverage industry. We’re looking forward to partnering with our customers to create exciting new products as the possibilities are truly limitless!”
