At next month’s SupplySide West show in Las Vegas, Israel-headquartered Frutarom will debut a black currant-derived ingredient called Activeberry.

As the name implies, Activeberry targets formulators of sports nutrition products. The black currant’s rich anthocyanin and antioxidant content anchor the ingredient’s performance benefits, for use in beverage, nutritional bar, or pill and capsule formats.

Made with no additional solvents or synthetic chemicals, Activeberry was designed in line with current consumer expectations when shopping for sports nutrition products. According to market research firm Innova Market Insights, natural claims in new sport-related food and beverage launches rose more than 20% from 2013 to 2017.

Sports nutrition in general is a growing segment. Innova found that globally, there has been a 25% increase in new food and beverage products launched with sport-related claims from 2013 to 2017.

“With the launch of Activeberry, Frutarom Health strengthen its position in the sport nutrition market, adding to its already substantial portfolio of active, natural ingredients,” said Itay Shafat, PhD, product manager for Frutarom Health.

According to the company, a study has been conducted concerning the ingredient’s vasodilation (or blood flow) efficacy, specifically looking at how blackcurrant extract manufactured using Frutarom’s proprietary solvent-free method compared to extraction using the more common ethanol method.

The results of the study are yet to be published, but in a press release, the company claimed that the ethanol-free extraction procedure led to improved vasodilation.

“As the science on Activeberry continues to show promising results, we will carry on research into its exciting possibilities,” Shafat added.

Frutarom will be at Booth #1163 at SupplySide West 2018.
