OmniActive gets self-affirmed GRAS for Capsimax
OmniActive has announced that it has obtained self-affirmed GRAS status for its Capsimax weight management ingredient.

“As part of OmniActive’s continued dedication in delivering innovative, effective and safe ingredients to the marketplace, we have invested and focused a tremendous amount of our efforts on Capsimax,” said Lynda M. Doyle, Sr. VP of Global Marketing, OmniActive. “Capsimax is a category-creating ingredient. And with new Capsimax science coming out of our robust clinical program, as well gaining GRAS self-affirmation, Capsimax remains a unique ingredient for sports nutrition, weight management and healthy, active lifestyles.”

Capsimax Capsicum Extract is derived from the capsicum pepper and delivers effective levels of capsaicinoids without the oral and gastric burning sensation of unprotected red hot peppers. Capsimax is manufactured using OmniBead Beadlet Technology to encapsulate the beneficial heat of concentrated, highly-active natural capsicum in a controlled release coating. Capsaicinoids are backed by more than 90 human clinical studies, and Capsimax supports the mobilization of fats for energy production and as such can support health weight management.

Among those studies was OmniActive’s own study reported earlier this year that showed Capsimax supplementation decreased the waist-to-height ratio in test subjects.  This is often thought of as a better indicator of overall health than is the more commonly referenced body mass index (BMI).  BMI has been criticized for not taking into account lean muscle mass.  Most NFL running backs, for example, have BMIs that put them into the obese category.  Another study released earlier this year showed Capsimax could decrease appetite measures.
