Soylent: GM algae supplements
Soylent has already secured $22.3m (€20.29m) in funding for its personalised supplement concept, which allows users to customise supplements to their body type and individual taste with guidance on how much powder to use for a meal or snack.
The drinks, powders and bars contain algal flour and soya protein.
Interestingly, the company, which describes itself as pro GMO, uses bioengineered algae in its products.
“Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be a safe and economic option for industrial food production, as long as they and their cultivars are well-researched and documented and their propagation is controlled in order to preserve the biodiversity of wild plants,” the company writes on its site.
“Like our views on processed foods, we don't believe that the process of genetically modifying an organism inherently damages or reduces the nutritive qualities of that organism.”
The founder Rob Rhinehart says the brand aims to provide “maximum nutrition with minimal effort” with products developed with “affordability and efficiency in mind”.
