Role of the gut microbiome in autoimmune disease
The last presentation at the IPA World Congress + Probiota Americas was given by Dr Jayne Danska, Senior Scientist, Hospital for Sick Children and Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
Dr Danska discussed how manipulations of the gut microbiome, including treatment with probiotic strains, can alter host immunity, metabolism and islet-directed autoimmunity in mouse models. She also discussed data from longitudinal studies of children at high-risk, pre-diabetic children, which showed distinct alterations in immune responses to commensal bacteria.
