Non-organic materials nearing sunset considered
Whether or not carrageenan – a stabilizer and thickener used in dressings and dairy products – should remain on the National List of non-organic materials that can be used in or to process organic products dominated the public comment period of the Spring NOSB meeting in Washington. Members of the board indicated at the meeting that they are torn on whether the controversial ingredient should stay or go. They also listened to comments on whether 14 other materials that will automatically expire from the National List in 2018 should be renewed.
