Something smells fishy…
NutraIngredients-USA’s Stephen Daniells climbed on to his soapbox for our seventh most read science article of the year with his examination of the media reporting around the omega-3 blood pressure meta-analysis.
In his editorial, Something smells fishy: Why the media silence over the blood pressure benefits of omega-3?, Daniells asked why a new meta-analysis of 70 randomized clinical trials – the gold standard – was ignored by the mainstream media.
“If you look at the pyramid of scientific evidence, at the very top sits systematic reviews and meta-analyses,” wrote Daniells. “So you’d think that, when faced with data from 70 – that’s a seven followed by a zero – randomized clinical trials (which sit the next tier down on that pretty pyramid) a journalist would sit up and take note.
“Apparently not.”
