Study supports probiotic label claims for bacteria levels: Study
A study of five commercially available probiotic products has found that the bacterial levels in the products were similar to those stated on the package, results that support the QA/QC strategies of the brands investigated.

Results published in Anaerobe indicated that the colony counts for Align (P&G), Lactinex (Becton Dickenson and Co.), Bio-K+ (Bio-K Plus International, Inc.), and Culturelle (Amerfit) matched those stated on the label.

The commercial product Florastor (Biocodex) did not state any levels on the label but was found to contain a significant viable colony count of over nine billion cfus, greatly exceeding the one million Biocodex states on its website.

“This study answers some of the questions raised about colony viability in current commercial probiotic preparations,” wrote researchers from R. M. Alden Research Laboratory (Culver City, CA), and UCLA School of Medicine.

“While these results are encouraging, they cannot be extrapolated to other agents and should be confirmed by other investigators. When clinical trials are undertaken, the investigators should not only evaluate the clinical efficacy of each agent studied but also verify the concentrations of the actual commercial preparations used during the clinical trial.”
